Coaches Proposals/Chair's Survey

This past August, into September and October, a  group of 14 coaches with a collective experience of 233 years (16+/average) joined together to explore - what in their opinion is necessary - changes to keep the sport competitive, viable and inviting for the participants, parents and volunteers in a landscape that has evolved into a significantly different one than existed in the recent past.

To that goal a series of Coaches Proposals were generated by this group and are included below. These Proposals are neither endorsed nor rejected by the Conference Board. In fact, there is not agreement by 100% of the representative coaches.

These Proposals are being presented here to gather the thoughts of the Conference Chairpeople. Please review each Proposal and provide a written comment to all, a few or none as you see fit.

Roll the mouse over the Comment Box to see the coaches rationale for that Proposal.
    Proposal #1:
Align the WCSC into 6 Divisions with Division 1-2-3 having 5 teams and Division 4-5-6 having 6 teams based off of 2014 finish in dual meets and championships . Click here for the potential new Division breakdown.
    Proposal #2:
Swim 50-yard/meter events in all 13/over age groups for all Divisions. This may be considered for Dual Meets and/or the Championships.
There are presently 33 teams in the WCSC. Historically, the members of the upper 3 divisions have had more meets counting invitationals. The reduction to 5 teams in Divisions 1, 2 and 3 will result in one less dual meet for each team in those Divisions. However, this will provide those teams with more flexibility with respect to the scheduling of practice time and their desire to participate in Invitationals. The increase to 6 teams in Divisions 5 and 6 will provide these teams with one more dual meet per season and thus allow for more competition, which these Divisions have not historically enjoyed. Division 4 will not notice a change.
A majority of the WCSC teams, particularly, those in Divisions 3-4-5-6, choose to compete at the 50-yard distance in all 13-and-over races. It is the view of this group that 50-yard races will allow coaches to attract, develop and retain talent through these age groups, that may be hesitant to participate in meets due to the longer distance requirements. Additionally, this will make for more competitive and exciting races and shorter dual meet times.
    Proposal #3:
Dual Meet Diving will be 3 dives for 10/u and 4 dives for 13/u and 17/u classes. (Currently, 3 dives for 10/u and 5 dives for 13/u and 17/u.)
    Proposal #4:
Permit and encourage sanctioned and officiated “diving divisional invitational” that will count towards WCSC Championship participation criteria.
This will allow divers to continue to develop and modify skills through the age groups, while shortening the time of the diving events and allow coaches to attract and retain participants and give them the ability to compete at various skill levels.
With the limits on extra divers, this will allow divers to meet the participation requirement for championships as well as gain valuable competitive experience to develop their skills in a controlled environment.
    Proposal #5:
Include diving in all dual meets. Facilities that do not have diving boards, must contest diving at the opponents’ site or make alternative arrangements.
    Proposal #6:
Shift the WCSC Championship Meet to begin the last Monday of July 2015. In addition, combine the 6-8-10 age groups trials onto Monday, July 27; the 12-14-17 age groups trials on Tuesday, July 28; all diving on Wednesday, July 29; Thursday July 30 championship meet
All meets need to include all 58 events.  It is clear that some pools are not fit to provide a diving venue due to the depth of the pool.  However, eliminating diving due to the viability of the pool is not true to the spirit of competition that is the foundation of our summer season.  A team should not be allowed to benefit from not having diving at a home meet, yet enter a full slate of divers when they travel to an away meet.  While we recognize that the visiting team may benefit when it travels to a site with no diving venue, it is incumbent on the host team to provide a legal diving venue for all meets that it hosts. If it is not able to, the following accommodations must be made;  1) If the host team is unable to provide a legal diving site at its pool, the diving events can be moved to the visiting teams site in order to complete those events, or 2) If both teams agree, the diving events may be eliminated from the meet.  This is only allowable if both teams agree to this change.  At no time may the diving events be eliminated due to site incompatibility or the wishes of one of the two teams participating in a dual meet.
One of the most significant discussion points in the coaches group meetings was the recognition that the season – when viewed in total with Invitational events and the WCSA “counties” meet - length that often forces families to miss the later WCSC Championship meet, due to camps, vacations, school commitments and sports. Additionally the “traditional” schedule structure of WCSA meet, followed by the WCSC championship, leaves the 8-and-under group without competition for over a week and this gives foundation to a shorter season.
